Tread covers are complete, ready-made treads fitted over the existing steps — including a new step nose. This makes it the most thorough form of renovation short of replacing the staircase: even worn, damaged or hollowed-out steps disappear completely under the new layer.
Expect € 1,500 to € 3,500 for a standard staircase, depending on the number of steps, the layout and the chosen material. Tread covers come in wood-look, HPL and PVC finishes, and work well on concrete and stone staircases too.
Unsure between cladding and tread covers? Rule of thumb: if the step itself is still flat and sound, cladding suffices; if the noses are worn round or damaged, tread covers are the more durable choice. The specialist assesses it while measuring up.
