What does a staircase renovation cost in 2026?
All guide prices in one place: cladding, tread covers, closing an open staircase and the extras — plus the factors that decide where you land in the band.
Cladding a staircase with PVC or laminate in 2026 costs on average € 1,000 to € 2,500 for a standard staircase of 13-14 steps, including materials and fitting. If you choose tread covers — complete new treads over the old ones — expect € 1,500 to € 3,500 per staircase. It is the most thorough form of renovation short of replacing the staircase, and also suitable for concrete and stone stairs.
Where you land in that band depends mainly on the layout and the preparation work. A straight staircase is cheapest; a quarter turn or landing means made-to-measure work per step. On an open staircase the undersides are finished too or risers are fitted, and if carpet or another covering is still on it, removal work is added — a bare staircase is cheaper. Randstad rates run 10-20% higher.
The smaller jobs have their own bands: closing an open staircase costs € 750 to € 2,000, a new handrail or stair gate € 250 to € 900, and LED lighting in the steps € 300 to € 800 per staircase. Combining pays: the specialist is there with the tools anyway and you pay the fitting cost only once.
Always request multiple quotes: for exactly the same staircase, differences between companies run into double-digit percentages. Set every quote against the price index and check what is included — measuring, removing old covering, step noses and risers should all be named before you agree.
